CCS agreement

Gas Storage Denmark to kickstart and accelerate knowledge to the CCS industry in Denmark

At Gas Storage Denmark (GSD) we have been given the task of preparing the establishment of Denmark’s first land-based CO2 storage by the Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities, Dan Jørgensen. We are both very excited and very proud.

The Danish government together with a majority of the political parties have reached to an agreement on the framework conditions for storage of CO2 in the Danish underground. The agreement specifically stipulates GSD's task of initiating the preparations for a CO2-storage in Stenlille.

By conducting a pilot project in Stenlille it is the ambition to generate knowledge on underground CO2 storage  while simultaneously facilitate the early storage of CO2 in Danish underground.

Unique and valuable knowledge

For more than 30 years at GSD we have been specialists in underground storage. It gives us a unique knowledge foundation in terms of large-scale underground energy storage and therefore, for us this task is naturally placed with us.

To reach the climate goal of a 70% CO2-reduction before 2030, all sails must be set and we appreciate to be given the possibility of adding our contribution to reaching the target.

The CO2-storage project at Stenlille could bring acceleration, speed, and valuable knowledge to the deployment of the Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) in Denmark, and thereby bring innovation to the entire sector.

Through the project, we aim at creating a platform for innovation and acceleration of the CCS-technology in Denmark. The platform will be used to disseminate and share technical reservoir knowledge as well as experience to promote development of the industry – through the entire value chain from capture, transport, and storage of CO2.
